Steve,
> I think this may be a bit of an oversimplification...<
Perhaps I am "picky" ;) but the results are visible if you care to look at
it.
The diagnostic tool runs OK on my device. I use PM Pro 5.02 for profiling
matte papers. Dark areas are a problem in prints and they get "redish" in
deep blacks. And surprisingly it shows up the same when calibration and
profiling the display. I got redish deep blacks and bandings with the Eye
One Spectro.
> If the paper is matte then the level of accuracy desired may be too much
for this instrument. The Eye-One is not supposed to be all things to all
people. Perhaps a higher-level instrument is called for?<
Eye One spectro has poor performance in deep blacks and seems also to be
sensitive for temperature changes. It would be very interesting to see a
test how well the different spectro devices perform against a reference
unit. How well for example do X-rite Pulse, Eye One Pro and Spectrolino
perform when comparing?
>We've had good results with the Eye-One spectro calibrating both CRT and
LCD displays.<
Have you checked in dim lights at deep black areas for banding etc on a
greyscale file?
With the Eizo ColorEdge it's a bit different (compare to Quato displays) and
the calibration will be fine regardless of the measuring device, because the
Eizo loads calibration values which are done in the factory (with a Minolta)
and "only" profiles the display with the measuring device.

Soren
