M C,
It's hard to express an opinion at a distance, but I tend to agree with
Steve Upton in his reply to you on June 1, that the device itself is not
likely to be defective (specially when it passes the EyeOneDiagnostics like
yours does judging from the log you sent me). It's more likely that:
(a) the software you are using in conjunction with the EyeOne is limited in
its ability to create good profiles (and therefore you ought to try
different software); or
(b) the software may be OK, but some of the settings you chose within it
were incorrect (in which case you ought to review your settings carefully in
case you missed something); or
(c) the paper you are attempting to profile is not meant to be used with the
type of inks used by your inkjet printer (certain papers are meant only for
dyes, others only for pigments, and only can be used with both: if you try
to profile a paper built for dyes, but your inkjet uses pigments, you will
not succeed, no matter how hard you try); or
(d) the medium (paper type) you are trying to profile exhibits rather
unusual characteristics that cannot be captured by this device, and require
a more sophisticated and versatile one (although I am not sure how often
something like this would happen in real life).
The EyeOne is a relatively inexpensive spectrophotometer, and there are
spectros that are more powerful, specialized and precise, and also much more
expensive. So, the EyeOne has its limits, like any device in its price
range, which makes it possible (but not too likely) that you just hit on one
of them somewhere, though I am not sure what that would be.
What I know is that I own an EyeOne too, and I have used it successfully to
make several profiles, none of which, so far, exhibits the red cast in the
shadows (or any cast anywhere else) when I soft proof to that profile.
Best of luck to you.
