Yes, the Ultrachrome PhotoBlack is not as black as you might expect. It
leans to the brown/red side a bit. So printing with black ink only is not
really useful, you would indeed need to color manage to achive your desired
result.

Subject: 9600 black only
Running black only out of 9600. We are trying to get
more of a neutral black out of our 9600 for halftone
work flow. I know this can be done through edits to
black through GMG.Our owner, posed the statement that
the reason we bought the 9600 is because we could have
it print blacks as black without other colors
involved. When I tried to get a black only out of the
9600 the black looked on the warm side, almost with a
yellowish cast to it. I tried a screen test of screens
of 5% to 100%. I put a glass on the proof and did not
see evidence of any other colors being applied to it.
It just looked like black, but was as I say warm. Is
this the nature then of the black Ultra chrome. We are
using the Photo Black.I was curious if the Matte Black
was different. Also just to verify then, in order to
get the black we need to acheive, we do need to color
manage it?
