The backing board holds the target for you and makes it easier to measure,
but it isn't absolutely necessary. You move the spectro over the row in one
swift motion and it reads the whole lot of patches, then you move on to the
next row. The only real trick is that you have to make sure it starts and
ends on paper white, which isn't terribly difficult at all.
