Do you actually know that Adobe is making twice as much profit from
UK sales as from US sales? You can't just look at the retail price.
A very large amount of that is usually wholesalers/retailers
profit. That's why some retailers can sell things in the UK at 50%
off and still make a comfortable living.
I would imagine that they are making way more than twice the profit
and you don't need to factor resellers or local taxes into the picture.
Untaxed prices from the Adobe UK and US sites in April 2007 (using
Yahoo for exchange rate calculations):
Sterling Prices US UK
CS3 Upgrade £224 £465
CS3 Full £916 £1,409
Dollar Prices US UK
CS3 Upgrade $440 $912
CS3 Full $1,799 $2,766
Have you paid more than double for a CS3 upgrade?
Admittedly, Adobe have done some hard work on the UK English edition
- changing the spelling of "color" to "colour" etc. But even they
can't justify the price differential in those terms.
The official excuse is that they are protecting UK customers from
exchange rate fluctuations...
In any case, as with cars in Europe, you sell things for what a
particular market will bear - that's capitalism! All's fair in
love, war, and business!!
That's right. And it'll bear some more criticism from disgruntled UK
customers.
