A very large amount of that is usually wholesalers/retailers profit.
This begs the question of why non-U.S. distributors and dealers need to
make a higher profit than those in the U.S.
I once bought a software package direct out of the U.S. (I live in
Canada.) When it came time to buy an update to this software, I was
told that they now had a Canadian distributor and that I would have to
buy it from them. I called to order the update from the Canadian
distributor and they told me I would have to pay $75 to "register" my
software in Canada before I could buy the upgrade. I told them to go
take a flying leap and that since they had not added any value to my
software it would be a cold day in hell before I paid out my hard earned
money for nothing in return. I then called the U.S. company and gave
them a piece of my mind. They sent me the update and one of the sales
persons told me that the Canadian distributor was an old college friend
of the owner. Later this company went back to selling direct into
Canada. If you don't stand still for this kind of rip-off you can
change the system.
If the local distributor and dealer does not add value, they should not
be allowed to add on to the price.
The good news is that I have a U.S. mailing address and if any Canadian
company gives me grief, I buy direct from the U.S. and import the goods
myself. Over the years, the vast majority of Canadian dealers have
become very competitive with the U.S. dealers. If the consumer has
alternatives, then the free market can work for the consumer as well.
