So The British ... (Oops, I meant) The Raw is Coming! The Raw is Coming!
Haven't we been hearing that for a while already?
Maybe I've spent too many years breathing D-76 & E-6 fumes but I'm not
impressed.
There are two ways to create art. Both are valid and can produce
beautiful results.
One way is through doing things and hoping for an accident to happen
that produces a pleasing result. This method evolves trial and error
and is very time consuming. When it works we call it serendipity. Many
wonderful pieces of art have been created this way.
The other is to pre visualize the final rendering of the art. I refer
to this as "call shot pool". This means that the person creating the
art understands the underlying technology and science behind each step
in the process and can visualize the final outcome of the combined
processes. Ansel Adams and his Zone System is an example of this.
Today it is the person who shoots RAW and knows the limits of the
process and how to create the final print based on their pre visualization.
Charles seems to be an advocate of art by serendipity, and this is
fine. However, he got one thing wrong. RAW is not coming...It is here
and works great for those that understand it.
