Hi Barry,

I haven't used the IPF5100 but I have 8 of the IPF5000s and I've been thrilled with them.

I run a print lab for the Applied Photo program at Sheridan College in Toronto, Ontario. About 160 students do all their printing on these printers. My 8 printers are connected via ethernet to 20 G5 Quad Macs and run 24 hours a day during the school year.

We're fully color managed including custom print profiles for 4 media types. I've tried a variety of profiling methods at this point and am not 100% satisfied with any of them, but I'm pretty picky. My students and co-workers are thrilled with the quality and color accuracy from screen to print. We're able to closely match colors between media types (Glossy, Satin, Matte and Hahnemuhle) with custom profiles (although this is "eyeball" subjective and not measured with a spectro). I've had the most success so far using Bill Atkinson's color targets and ProfileMaker. I'd love to try Monaco but we haven't been able to afford a license yet.

I've not experienced a single head failure in two years and more than 15000 prints. Occasionally the printers crash and report a head error (not the same as head failure which requires replacement), but this merely requires a reboot. I've found the color quality to be exceptional and the ink usage to be much more economical than the Epson 4800s I was running previously, even with the constant automatic head cleanings. I love the web reporting features and the remote admin ability.

Check out the IPF5000 wiki.. it's excellent.

It offers far more documentation than Canon's site. That's my only complaint, lack of documentation .. but that's not much different from most other manufacturers I've dealt with. I've also bumped into a weird issue with the latest generation of media description for Canon Satin paper, but Canon's aware of the issue and working on a fix.

Hope this helps.

Any one had any experience with this latest 17" printer from Canon? Are the canned profiles decent? Is it easy to make custom profiles? Does it play well in a Mac network environment when shared from a Mac host? Given it's size, weight, claimed color gamut and printing speeds it seems to be an attractive alternative to Epson's 4880 printer.

Yesterday I spoke with a vendor who made some vaguely disparaging comments regarding this printer. Specifically he indicated it was very difficult to profile and that it was NOT intended for "high volume" output. Both of these comments were definitely at odds with others I've heard. Comments?
