One of the very few benefits to the media consolidation that has happened in the US is that with their increased size comes increased need for standardization.

A few years ago I was working on a newsprint ad campaign for a movie that was about to come out. Living in LA I looked up the info for the Los Angeles Times and with a few calls found myself talking with someone in their prepress department. Turns out the Tribune Company which owns the Times and many other papers had standardized their presses and created a profile for them. The person I spoke with emailed the profile to me and amazingly the end result was very good.

So my suggestion would be to call some of the papers you'll be dealing with and see if they have done something like that. Sure beats guessing.
