I had one further thought (danger warning). If IDCS2 worked fine (in terms
of this dark printing issue) with profiles created from targets printed from
Photoshop then why doesn't selecting Emulate InDesign 2.0 CMS OFF in color
policies and printing with the original profile solve the problem?

Adobe changed something with IDCS3 and it no longer prints the same as PSCS3 or IDCS2. And I have already mentioned there that there is a difference between with PPC or Intel versions. There was a thread on the Adobe forums about this where someone (not sure about an official Adobe position) that that is the way it is and said the problem is in the print drivers. Now why PS prints the way it did and if we will see the same change in the next version of PS I do not know.

As for selecting Emulate InDesign 2.0 CMS OFF you will not be able to select a printer profile. This setting is the same as ID2.0 when you turned CMS OFF or when you print with PS and select No Color Management.

What you will notice if you get a profile target printed with IDCS3 running on a PPC chip with CMS turned off is that it will be a bit darker than the same target print from PS with CMS off in the print dialog. What will even puzzle you more is when you get a target printed with IDCS3 running on a Intel chip it will be even darker and with a more bluest cast.

The good news is that crating a profile for each of these scenarios will will make everything look the same. And, that really is your only option.

I've suggested to the 2 guys in question that they give that setting a try
with their current profiles (the ones which are printing colour accurate but
too dark in CS3) and get back to me. It sounds too simple but...

On the PPC side with IDCS3 they might be able to get by with setting in the printer driver less ink density or lighten depending on the option available in the driver. But, that is trial and error, guesswork.

Doyle

Cheers, Eric
