Yup, that's where a Spectrophotometer is far from ideal as a tool for
display calibration. If as you say, you're less concerned with the accuracy
of the white calibration, go with a Colorimeter. And they only have 'issues'
(not that huge) with wide gamut displays or displays where the filters are a
poor match.

I don't thing there's any technical reason a Spectrophotometer should be inferior in the shadow detail, it probably comes down to how the software drives it (integration time on dark readings, fixed timing or adaptive), and the time you're prepared to wait to get a result.
