Dear Mr. Breton,

Given that the computed CCTs were only about 100K apart, and that for that 100K you are giving up more light output (35W vs. 50W), the 5000K bulbs do not appear to have much of an advantage. That said, if I was making an installation and I wanted to use Solux but the fixtures were open sided, then I would probably choose the black sided 5000K, just to eliminate the yellow light coming out of the sides. I do not remember seeing a 50W black sided bulb available when I purchased my samples.

One thing I should mention about the black coating. It is a paint coating, but not baked on initially. So when first used there is some outgassing, aka smoke, that comes from the bulb. This can be a bit disconcerting and might have you rechecking electrical connections, as did I, until you are sure it is only the paint being baked. I had to let the fixture run until the smoke subsided before making the measurements. This black coating is also somewhat fragile and can be scraped off during handling, especially if prying is necessary to remove the bulb from the fixture (personal experience here).

As for the PR-655, I wish I could afford one. I am just lucky that one of my clients owns one and is kind enough to grant me occasional access. It's sampling interval is 4 nm from 380 to 780 nm.

Robin,

Your findings agree with my humble findings. I don't have the data with me
but, if memory serves, I could *not* get a better D50 spectrum out of the
5000K bulbs, even when driven at my regular 13 to 15 volts level. As as
matter of fact, my conclusion at the time was that the 4700K bulbs were
better than the 5000K bulbs, no matter what I'd try. So, it was a big
disappointment. Same price, you'll say, for either bulbs, but why bother
with the 5000K units, I figured?

Lucky you, with your PR-655! Isn't the 655 giving 5nm resolution only, btw?

Roger
