I have another high-level question regarding the capabilities of
the low level hardware. Is there any facility for simply routing
the signal from line-input directly to line-output without any

it arrives.
Or does all such processing have to go through a digitization phase
first?
There is support in CoreAudio for direct monitoring. However, it is
very dependent upon the details of the specific audio hardware that
you're using. In other words, there must be an actual direct
hardware link between input and output for this to work. If
CoreAudio is forced to resort to a software link, then you'll have
the latency of buffering to contend with.
