I agree, from the user's point of view there should be no distinction
between click dragging a slider and scroll wheeling it, IMO, for my
software at least. Every Mac ships with either a scroll wheel mouse
or scrolling track pad.
I think I prefer to have the user choose from different ways of
inventing (defining?) a gesture in an options panel. Choose from
timeout, modifier key or mouse leaving bounds etc. I'm currently
testing a voice recognition solution where the user shouts "begin" and
"end" to indicate their gesture ;) Choose your own keywords..
Curiously, Logic Pro 8 seems to be applying scroll wheel movements to
some of my sliders that I haven't even implemented the scroll wheel on
(same for Apple DLS synth).
