I disagree. I am always using the Apple List search because I don't
initially want all the extra stuff that Google finds. Of course I
usually end up on Google anyway...

Doubtful. For the people who are comfortable enough to inform their
own research, they're going to be using a search engine anyway, so
they pick up not only on the mailing list content but also blogs,
Stack Overflow, etc. The people who don't search beforehand won't do
it with either Google or the mailing list search; they're either
looking for a quick fix or don't know enough about the subject matter
to engage in a worthwhile search.
The only people whom a functioning mailing list search really benefits
are those who remember a thread from a few months ago on the very
topic they're trying to research. Certainly useful, but I predict a
marginal to zero decrease in repeat questions if Apple fixes the
search.
