But for people who are old-time UNIX types, 'shutdown -r now' has one advantage that the method documented in the article doesn't: applications cannot cancel it the way they can cancel it through the AppleEvent mechanism
Sometimes there are situations where you Just Want to Bring the Machine Down, Unconditionally. Now. Where the only thing you care about is making sure the disk is synced. Say, for example, if the GUI is hosed, but you have telnet/ssh access.
In which case you use 'shutdown -r now', or the even bigger hammer of 'reboot'.

Even though you've solved your problem, I have to point out that calling /sbin/shutdown is the moral equivalent of kicking the cat. Don't restart that way. Send an AppleEvent to restart.
