Which actually is why I kept posting - it's not so much about the specific problem, but rather that one shouldn't get the idea that the restriction was valid for everyone.

and leafing through the Wrox chapter on it some time ago, but I gathered
from that basic investigation that there is a D2W API which allows one to
gain programmatic access to the rule system. Have I misunderstood?

This is correct. You can create rules programmatically and you can create your own WebAssistant- or RuleEditor-like interface if you want (I did that as an afternoon project, see RuleEditor in the Experimental/ section in Wonder)
