That sounds about right to me.

As I just said on another list.... The axiom "Apple is a hardware company" applies here. But now that they have a viable server platform of their own, it's no different than MS making .NET run only on Windows.

The goal for WO (from Apple's perspective) is no longer to sell licenses of the software, it's to sell hardware. Unfortunately, to achieve this goal, it means some are going to get left behind. That's life, that's business... it sucks.

So, to try to understand things a bit more clearly:

If I've got a Windows developer, he can still use WebObjects at 5.2.x (for now) and the usual challenges to do with deployment stand.

If I've got a lucky Mac developer then he can use XCode 2.1 and he'll be all set, until it comes to deployment and then he's got to get licensing sorted out.

If I want to deploy to anything other than OS X (server) then things will not be supported by Apple.

Does that sound about right?

My main worry is the Windows development to be honest - I simply can't justify WebObjects adoption if the long-term roadmap for the product is firmly 'development on Mac only'. It's a shame, because people were really (finally) coming round to WO over here - (sigh)

They also stated that Apple will continue to allow builds as

But if they don't then your on your own ;)

I will echo Robert's comments. There was no ambiguity in the statements made. Your choice for supported deployment is

OSX. Period.

I'm trying to recall if the license key is platform

specific. It was

at one time, but I don't think it is any more.

Jeremy,

Apple was VERY clear. From WO 5.3 forward, WO is only

supported on OS X

for development AND deployment. If you want to deploy on

another

platform,
you need to do so using WO 5.2.4 or earlier. This is what

Apple is

supporting.

One might consider using 5.3 to create a .war file, buying

a copy of

OS X
Server, then locate the WO deployment license key file, use

it in your

.war deployment and then deploy on any compliant 1.4.2 or

1.5 JRE. If

you
do this, however, Apple will not support you. Doing this

would seem to

be
"legal," but it is clearly not supported.

This is a problem for us because we have WO applications

that run

executables on our Solaris boxes that require DCE/DFS.

Since there is

no
native DCE/DFS client for OS X, we cannot run these on our
Xserves--and we
have lots of them and love them--but we still need Solaris

boxes to

meet
some of our requirements.

Let's see...some good news

5.3 Dev is "free" (with 10.4 client)
5.3 Dep is "free" (with 10.4 server)

No news on 5.3 deps for non 10.4-systems (Windows,
especially)....BAD!

I hope we get a clear signal that WO is not dead for

deployment

on
other platforms...especially since we just submitted

a budget for

over $150k to deploy an enterprise system on Windows.....

Did I say....ack?
