But if you are "giving" the software away with those boxes in any case, where is the advantage on giving the software away without the box?

I admit that there will be a component of people encountering WO and it having a "halo" effect, but since they would have encountered it on non-Mac hardware I'd put my money on even more people forgoing purchasing a Mac just to get the software.
