Thanks everyone for your help. I ran out of time getting the WOLongResponsePage to work with my slow pages (it was the end of our iteration). I ended up creating my own long response solution using DHTML. When the user clicks the "slow action" button, it triggers a javascript function that replaces the current html body with my long- response page including an animated gif. We don't need the auto- refresh aspect of WOLongResponsePage, so this DHTML solution works good enough for us. The best is that I didn't have to change anything in my slow pages.
