I'm unclear here.

You have a new iMac with Leopard, but you have WO 5.2 installed? Did you purchase WO 5.2 Separately? 5.4 comes as part of the developer tools on Leopard. They may not have been installed by default, but if you look on the OS Installer DVD, you'll find the framework installers.

If you purchased WO 5.2, you really didn't need to, so set that aside for now.

WO development is in a state of transition right now. Transition for the better, certainly, but it will take a bit of patience right now. Apple is paying far more attention to WO now than they have in the past, but their attention is now focused on the frameworks themselves, and no longer on the development tools. Apple now recommends, and uses internally, Eclipse/WOLips for WO development. The insanely simple-to-use (but severely limited) Xcode-based development wizards and one-click deployment are a thing of the past. You now need to use Eclipse/WOLips for development. These tools are improving on a daily basis and there is tons of support out there on the lists, but the first step with WO now involves many more pre- steps. Don't get discouraged, WO is worth the effort, as once your application becomes even slightly more complicated, WO will save you huge amounts of time.

Xcode & the apple-provided tools (for WO versions up to 5.3) were easier to get out of the starting gate with, but once you get past the initial examples, you realize how poor a Java IDE Xcode is. Eclipse is much more powerful, but it is also more intimidating. Use the tutorials that people have suggested, they will really help you get past the initial learning curve.

Thanks, Pascal.

I have installed (I think) WebObjects 5.2. But I can't locate (or I
don't know where to look for them) the launcher icons.

When will WO 5.4.1 be available? And thanks for the links much
appreciated. I plan to spend the Festivus Holiday working with WO.

Cheers, Doug

Hi and welcome,

yes, WebObjects works with Leopard, but WO 5.4 has some bugs. I
strongly suggest that you wait for WO 5.4.1 or, if you have access to
a Tiger machine, that you install WO 5.3 if you can't wait.

As for getting started, check out:

Hello all,

First, Happy Festivus.

Second, I have made the twenty year cut with PC/Windows and gone
full iMac.

Third, I have done a fair amount of web development with Adobe/
Macromedia software.

Fourth, I have now moved to WebObjects.

The questions:

First, does WebObjects work with Leopard.

Second, any tutorial or book recommendation would be most appreciated.

Cheerio, Doug
