Yes, we use the WebSphere console to deploy WO applications as true
WARs. The deployment process is straightforward. There is only one
exception: when you want to redeploy an application. I don't know why,
but we always have to 1) uninstall the application module using the
console; 2) stop the WebSphere; 3) manually delete the module
resources in the WebSphere applications folder; 4) start the WebSphere
and; 5) deploy the new version of the application. The application
doesn't start correctly if we do in a different way.

The creation of EARs is not mandatory, but it is a handy mechanism
even if you have to deploy only one module. The EAR has some
configuration about the module(s) you are deploying. So, you have
fewer things to change during the 5 steps of the console wizard for
application deployment.

Which version of WebObjects are you using?
