Just to tie a ribbon on this thread (which I've lugged around in my inbox for months :) ), on-demand loading of Javascript has finally been committed to Ajax.framework. The nastiest part is actually standing on the shoulders of a patch that will be in Prototype 2.0 that we brought forward into Ajax.framework, but it appears to work in all of the browsers I tested on (including Safari 2.0 which was one of the ones that previously had issues with the dom route -- the patch is disgusting and clever, though).
