Paste problem with 17" powerbook

I've been using X11 on a 12" 800 MHz powerbook for several months without
problems. Recently I installed X11 on a new 17" powerbook and I have the
following strange problem. The problem is reproducible, even when i boot
the 17" powerbook off the 12" PB hard disk:
Sometimes copy and past (by highlighting and option-clicking, respectively)
work fine. However, most times, when I paste (option-click), nothing happens
until I touch the trackpad. Thus, for reliable pasting, the sequence on
my 17" powerbook is: option-click, then touch trackpad.
Wierd!!! Any advice?
Also, any chance quartz-wm will either support multiple, desktops, or better yet,
be compatible with CodeTek Virtual Desktop?
