gnome uses sawfish as default. Unfortunately the install via fink does
not work as gnome does not recognise sawfish as a gnome complient
windows manager.
In you .xinitrc file change:
exec quartz-wm
to
exec quartz-wm --only-proxy
This will not start quartz but will allow you to cut and past between X
applications and MAC OS X applications
You can execute gnome using gnome-session but it will complain about
sawfish
You can start sawfish from a terminal window (which will have no frames
until you start it) by:
sawfish &
You will now have frames. However, sawfish doesn't know about gnome
and visa versa. Windows have can get hidden under the top panel and
bottom panel. Crap really.
You may have more success with kde
You can start it using kde-session

Hello,
as a newbie Unix user, I have installed the latest edition of fink
under OS X.3 (jaguar), dev tools, and X11.
I used fink to install Gnome, which is working well; however I would
like to try using sawfish as the windows manager.
How can I use sawfish? Do I have to remove "exec quartz-wm" from the
.xinitrc file first?
I have also installed KDE through fink, but I do not now how to start
it up!
Any help you can provide to me would be greatly appreciated!
