When the Apple X11 beta and XDarwin 4.3 were out, it seemed that the
only major difference was a couple binaries: quartz-wm and xaqua, I
think. I had installed Apple's X11, mved these aside; installed
XDarwin and then mved the apple bits back in.
This meant that I could use a script to swap out .xinitrc files and
start either X11.app or XDarwin.app.
This allowed for either rootless aqua (apple) or rooted
(xdarwin/windowmaker) modes depending upon my needs/moods.
So now we have Apple X11 based on 4.3 and the "much improved"
XDarwin 4.4 out.
I would like to install both to compare:
mv /usr/X11R6 /usr/apple/X11R6; install XDarwin and then
mv /usr/X11R6 /usr/xdarwin/X11R6
I could then swap out a link (ln -s) to point to either implementation.
Wouldn't I have to do this for /etc/X11 also?
To be totally safe you would need to swap /etc/X11 and /etc/fonts as
well. However, both of these probably are not necessary. These
configuration files have not changed much except for some bug fixes
due to Apple's X11 throwing in #pragma lines where they are not
wanted.
