A few people have reported this but we cannot reproduce this here. When
this happens, is there any crash log generated in
~/Library/Logs/CrashCatcher?
Doesn't look like it is specific to X11 though.

I have witnessed the same behavior. I used bash. It is not unique
to xterms though; I have had shells inside of Emacs silently exit for
no reason as well, particularly after failed unit test runs spawned
from a Makefile.
