for everyone's benefit, Thomas R. Treadway III pointed me to the solution:


Opening ports 6000-6063 on my ibook's firewall did the trick. As did 'xhost +' and setenv DISPLAY to my IP address:0.0 on the remote host.

And, yes, I am looking into alternatives to xhost +.
