Thanks,
ssh -X works
but the colors are really pathetic!

You will find that the XFree86 4.3.0 handles PseudoColor much better. You can download and install the first release candidate of 4.3.0 following directions at <http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.99.901/Install.html>. Of course, 8 bits of color will never look as good as 24 bits. However, XFree86 4.2.x had a known bug which caused it not to swap virtual colormaps correctly.

When I connect to to my work using SSH I use 'ssh -X' which allows X11 forwarding through the secure tunnel. In my case I have to do it twice like a stepping stone. When you are connected to your desired host there is no need to do a 'setenv DISPLAY ....' as the ssh command takes care of it for you. If you manage it you end up being 'unsecure' as the X11 path back is not encrypted.

Since you are going to use Cadence you may have trouble as it only wants 8-planes of pseudo-color. I saw in a previous post that X11 for MacOS X will not do this for you but Xdarwin will. Xdarwin is what I currently use. I set the options for 8-planes of colour and have to go to full screen mode for cadence. Any other X11 app can run in rootless mode.

Good luck.
