You're on the right track here.
I have the Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical (love the scrollie wheel :-] )
and the settings that work for me are:
Logitech Control Center configuration for the "Wheel Button" should be
set to "Advanced Click" with the
"Configure Advanced Click" tab settings "Click Type" = Click and
"Button number" = 3.
