I have cyrillic layout setup in OS X preferences->input menu and can type fine in cyrillic in OS X applications. However, I can't type in cyrillic in X11. When I switch to cyrillic layout in any X11 application (using input layout icon at the top bar), nothing is entered but numbers only.

What application are you typing into? Many X applications won't be able to handle cyrillic characters. If you run "xev" and type into its window, do the keysym names that get printed start with Cyrillic_? If so, the keyboard layout is working
