Using ttf fonts in X11

Hi,
I would like to using some of Apple's fonts under X11. I have converted
the fonts to .ttf using fondu, but how do you create the fonts.dir file
and others. Under linux I had ttmkfdir but that command does not exist
with apple's X11. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know this
was discussed before but I seem to have lost this info.
