Dear Apple,
I'm using the X11 version of Emacs under Apple's X11 server. From
years of using Emacs I'm used to making use of the Meta command keys,
so I would obviously be expected to uncheck "Enable key equivalents
under X11" so that the Command key can be used as Emacs' "Meta" key.
Fine. Of course, this means I can't copy cut buffer information from
X11 into Apple's GUI using Command-C and must use the mouse to select
"Cut" from the "Edit" menu. This is not so fine.
My way around this is to use the "Interface Builder" to edit the
"main.nib" file inside the X11 application folder, removing all of the
keyboard shortcuts for commands which I don't really need under X11.
Then these commands work just fine as Emacs "Meta" commands and I can
still keep the "Enable key equivalents under X11" checked! This works
just great. Afterall, the "Paste" function doesn't really do anything
useful under X11 anyway, since X11 has it's own paste function in each
program. About the only keyboard shortcut which is really useful under
X11 is Command-C so I kept that one enabled.
My problem is that X11 automatically creates keyboard shortcuts for
Command-1, Command-2, etc., as windows are opened. This is a pain
because I'd like to remove those also ("Meta-1" is a useful command
under Emacs), but there's no way to stop X11 from adding these! Can we
please have some control over this? Maybe a preference item which can
be controlled by editing the "com.apple.x11.plist" file? That would be
fine. If I could stop those shortcuts from being added I'd be "home
free"!
/raj
