Quoting Eugene Lee (email@hidden):
: Hi, I did something really stupid and need to try
: to recover my home folder after a rm -r
On any standard Unix sysstem, "rm" wipes the files with no chance of
Back in the days when Norton knew how to write software. There was
file recovery software for all of the major Unix systems.
I believe that most (Unix) file systems just free the inodes, leaving
the data untouched.
Yes, this was the reason I was hoping I could
save the data. When I issued the rm -r command,
it was instant with no 'audible disk activity'
and my disk showing the free space instantly. If
I for example erase 5 Gb from the finder, it
would take a while to empty the trash. Since this
was instant I imagined only nodes where deleted
and not the data themselves. I think when I
deleted the 'asam\ 1' file the system was doing
some kind of housekeeping since I've noticed both
Norton (caged on a boot disk) and Data Recover
make tempory partitions of the kind 'xxxx\ 1'.
The drive is HFS + with journalling enabled
I know the files are there but just can't see
them. There should be 2 5 Gb file vault images,
and then files from the copy of the user account
I made after I mounted one of the encrypted file
vault images, which I copied to a new folder.
After that I turned file vault off.
I guess I should give up, I didn't loose any work
data because I keep those files elsewhere on my
HD, so just 5 days Email and time is the only non
recoverable loss.
I'm checking my .cshrc from the back up and it contains only
source /sw/bin/init.csh
do I just copy this to my new home folder? The
old home folder was run under Mac OS X 10.2.8 and
x11 0.3 , is there any change to make for Mac OS
X 10.3 and x11 1.0??
Should I manually remake a .Xauthority file?
What other files would have been there that I need to replace?
asam :/
