Continuing the VMS digression...
You could halve the number of commands:
$ set message/noseverity/notext/noid/nofac ! Suppress ALL error output
$ mcr decw$utils:xmodmap
$ mcr decw$utils:xmodmap
[...]
$ set mess/severity/text/id/facility
This takes advantage of the fact that if you turn off all the pieces of a VMS error messgage,
no errors are output.
