BTW, I am using the same version you are, and followed the same instructions and it works well. The error seems to imply that perhaps part of the instructions were missed. This error came up for me until I did the steps under the heading "Updated libX11 binary -- Gimp crash fix" on the XDarwin page you listed below. I would say you should go thru this part one more time to make sure you got it all.
The site above gives a slightly modified version of gimp but you still need to do the fixes to X11 for it to work.
