Thanks, I found the Intel Gimp 2.4.2 at that same web site and it works.

Subject: Re: error when loading gimp2.2
No, this is an error that will only be reported by Gimp.app 2.2. The error is misleading; if you change it to say
Dyld Error Message:
Library not loaded: Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib
Referenced from: /usr/X11/lib/libXft.2.dylib
Reason: Incompatible library version: libXft.2.dylib requires version
3.0.0 or later, but libfontconfig.1.dylib provides version 2.0.0
This happens because the startup script for Gimp.app uses DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH to tell dyld to search for libraries inside of Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/lib/ before using the system libraries.
Unfortunately, they ship a version of libfontconfig in that bundle which is too old to work with the version required by
the version of libXft that ships with Leopard. Deleting that version of libfontconfig (the one inside of Gimp.app) would fix that error message; I don't know if that is enough to make it work in Leopard, you may run into other (unrelated) problems.
It looks like someone rebuilt 2.4.2 for PPC, you might give this a try:

Check this site out...
BTW, I am using the same version you
are, and followed the same instructions and it works well. The error seems to imply that perhaps part of the instructions were missed. This error came up for me until I did the steps under the heading "Updated libX11 binary -- Gimp crash fix" on the XDarwin page you listed below. I would say you should go thru this part one more time to make sure you got it all.
The site above gives a slightly modified version of gimp but you still need to do the fixes to X11 for it to work.
