nxclient (http://nomachine.com) worked fine for me in Tiger, and is
unusable with Leopard 10.5.1 OOTB. It struggles to bring up the
connection. If it succeeds in displaying a window, it quits
responding and shuts down within a minute or less. I typically have
emacs, eclipse, p4v, and an xterm all running on a KDE desktop in Red
Hat Linux, over the nxclient connection, and I run a 1750x1100 remote
desktop. I spend many hours a day working remotely this way.
I started subscribing to x11-users after my Leopard upgrade and
nxclient becoming unusable. The week before Thanksgiving I tried
following the instructions for reverting to Tiger X11, and managed to
break X11 completely - I ended up using Time Machine to revert back to
a couple of hours before I started the X11 changes, to get myself out
of that jam. Time Machine is fantastic!
Since then I've become a heavy user of VMWare Fusion, I run the
Windows nxclient within it to get my work done on my remote Linux
servers. It is working well enough, and I am overbooked enough, that
I will just wait for the X11 improvements to make it into an Apple
service pack release, before trying Apple X11 again.
I am really happy to follow the progress being made on resolving the
issues. Thanks to all of you doing X11 development on this list, and
happy holidays. Its going to be a better X11 world on Apple with the
newer x.org code base, and the improvements you are making.
Best wishes and thanks!
Robert
