Are you running an Intel Mac? You may have XDarwin installed.
It sounds to me like you probably have X installed alright, but that the program you're trying to launch in X Window System is not configured properly. YOu may have to set an .xauthority config file or something.
Have you tried launching whatever X environment you're using from the Terminal? If so, what response do you get?
Try this:
% open -a X11
or
% open -a xdarwin
or whatever X window system you're running.
