I'm sorry but I may be a bit slow. (I'm one of those softball players who just throw the ball in the air and swing the bat.) How else do I fire up an xterm (preferably uxterm) without starting X11.app first?

Two possibilities: 1. Open a Terminal.app window and type "xterm" at the command prompt. 2. Open /usr/X11/bin in the Finder and double-click on the xterm icon.
