Don't set DISPLAY in your shell login script.

Thanks for the reply, but this doesn't really do anything but break
things worse. :)
This is proof that you have worse stuff in your shell login script. ;-)
Again, my main issue is that X11 does NOT start when I double-click
the X11.app in the Utilities directory.
When you double-click that X11.app, it runs
/usr/bin/login -fp /usr/bin/X11/xterm
If it doesn't work, the most probable cause is that the scripts executed
by the login command prevent it from running.
