This new launchd stuff has been a real headache for me, though.
I want X11 and xterms; I don't want the Terminal, so it is a pain
to start up terminal just to get an xterm. Anyway, it doesn't
work right for me. I start Terminal, then
Last login: Fri Jun 27 15:32:56 on ttys000
muninn% xterm
Xlib: connection to "/tmp/launch-wUHHdr/:0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: /tmp/launch-wUHHdr/:0
muninn%
If I start xterm again from the same Terminal window, I get an
xterm, and DISPLAY is "/tmp/launch-XXXXXX/:0".
If I instead, after the first failed xterm I start and xterm
from the X11 Applications toolbar (or using the keyboard shortcut),
I get an xterm window, but DISPLAY is just ":0".
It seems as if the initial xterm isn't starting a login shell; I don't
ever seem to get a login shell, so new xterms launched via the
X11 Applications menu or the keyboard shortcut don't inherit the
login shell environment. This also thoroughly messes up the manpage stuff,
since the .login isn't getting run anywhere.
How do I track down what's going on here? What am I doing wrong?
I'm using a macbook pro running 10.5.3 (build 9D34), and
Xquartz 2.2.3; the Xquartz 2.2.3 was reinstalled after the last OS upgrade.
Thanks.
Terry
