Well, maybe I made it look too hard: But you always had to take care
of running xrdb, xmodmap, a windowmanager, and end it by exec'ing a
sessionmanager (that might well be the windowmanager), didn't you?
Of course, running xrdb and xmodmap would be optional if you didn't
need those features.
At least that is how I remember it, and that is how the standard Xorg
setup works now.
