executable environment variables

I have a number of .dylibs that have been built with a specific
-install_name for the expected production runtime environment.
reading man dyld it appears that I can set the environment variable
DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH, and this list of paths will be searched in addition
to the path specified in the library.
I find that this does work on command line, but does not in Xcode. I
am setting this variable in the 'Arguments' tab of the info pane for
the executable I am attempting to debug.
For now my work-around is to create some symbolic links in the
production location and point to the location of the libraries in my
project, but this is a problem for users wanting a self-contained
archive to build the project from.
So, is this a bug in Xcode, or are 'Variables to be set in the
environment:' not mean what I think it means? Is there any way to see
the environment for the executable being debugged?
