How to debug on older Mac OS X versions?

I have a question that may have been asked before but I could not
find any answers after I did some searches through the archive, but
apologies if I missed relevant earlier messages. I am step by step
transitioning from CW to Xcode and one of the concerns I have is with
source level debugging. With CW I can run the most recent version of
CW on 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 allowing me to easily debug issues on older
systems even while doing the development work on a recent system. I
know that with Xcode I can target older systems, but I gather than
Xcode 2.1 itself only runs on Tiger and has a new project format. So
what is the approach to do source level debugging on older Mac OS X
versions if needed? Do you export your project to an older project
format or so?
Thanks,
david.
