xcode error on create new project or open created project

I'm running XCode 2.1 (straight from WWDC). I've got Tiger (10.4.1).

I created a new Cocoa-Core Data app (not document based) and got this error:

File:    /SourceCache/DevToolsBase/DevToolsBase-620.0.81/pbxcore/Target.subproj/PBXTarget.m
Line:    1404
Object:    <PBXNativeTarget:0x011df9f0>
Method:    buildSettings

Don't invoke this method when build configurations are enabled.

I also get this error every time I open the project. 

Anyone seen this/got any advice?
