At the moment, I only have one machine available in my lab, but in
Xcode 2.2, it appears that you can enable distributed builds and
still disable sharing the computer. I would expect this to do
exactly what you are asking.
In my opinion, however, I think the machine would have to be pretty
slow for you to not see some benefit from having these machines
perform compiling, or the targets would have to be small enough that
it takes the slow machine longer to compile one file than it takes
the other shared machines to compile all remaining files. If you are
concerned about responsiveness, then set the slow machines to a low
priority. This should help a little.
