It's usually a good idea to include the versions of Xcode and Mac OS X that you're using when asking a question.
Assuming you're using Xcode 2.3 on Mac OS X 10.4.6, did you just change the configuration in the Build pane of the Target Info window? If so, you did not change the active configuration. All you changed was the configuration you were editing in that window. The active configuration is the one that will actually be built; separating it from the configuration you are editing enables you to avoid accidentally switching your active configuration just because you want to edit a setting in another configuration.
To change the active configuration, use the Active Build Configuration submenu of Xcode's Project menu. You can also place an Active Configuration pop-up menu in the Xcode toolbar by customizing it.
