Why is my Xcode 2.4.1 trying to use gcc 3.3?

2.4.1 is the latest version of Xcode, yes? If so, why is it trying to use gcc 3.3 when I have gcc 4.0 on my machine? How do I control the choice of compiler? (I looked in Xcode Preferences to no avail.)
