OK, setting Architectures to x86_64 directly (rather than as as separate C flag -arch x86_64) does build a 64 bit executable in Debug mode. But in Release mode, I still get the error message cc1: error: invalid option 'powerpc64' ??

Just a quick idea: have you set the "x86_64" setting only in the debug mode and not for the release mode (you can switch the settings you are changing in the Build Setting pane by a pull-down "capsule" at the top of the pane)?
